Abstract
Although effective treatments against Varma jacobsoni are now available, varroa disease still has a damaging effect on beekeeping with Apis mellifera. Mite infestation constitutes a continuous risk, which may lead to weakness or loss of colonies as soon as failure of control and treatment regimes employed occurs. Regular treatments are time-consuming and costly; the repeated use of drugs causes residue problems in the hive products which may have a negative influence on sales prospects.
