Abstract
The culture of Bacillus larvae from bulk honey samples and subsequent traceback to the hives of origin has been demonstrated to be a useful tool in the detection of American foulbrood (AFB) outbreaks (Hornitzky &Clark, 1991). However, the effectiveness of this procedure is dependent on the sensitivity of the cultural procedures for B. larvae, particularly since low concentrations of spores may occur in bulk honey samples originating from contaminated hives (Hornitzky & Clark, 1991).
