Abstract

Paenibacillus larvae spore numbers are frequently estimated by counting the number of colonies produced on media. Our aim was to determine whether the substrate being tested could affect the germination rate of spores. The addition of larval extracts increased germination rates by 164x, adult bee extracts by 6x and honey by up to 48x. Larvae and adult bee extracts still enhanced spore germination after they had been autoclaved.
