Six colonies of Apis mellifera meillfera from Norway were electrophoretically examined at wenty-three enzyme loci. Malate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme are polymorphic. Malic enzyme, previously reported to be monomorphic in the honeybee, possesses two allozymes. The lack of malic enzyme variation in the US is probably due to founder effect associated with the introduction of the honeybee into the New World.
