Abstract

The Asian honey bee mite, Tropilaelaps clareae, and the South African small hive beetle, Aethina tumida, are serious threats to beekeeping, and their spread around the world is of great concern. Already, the small hive beetle has been introduced to the USA where it causes greater problems than in its country of origin. This article reviews the biology of these pests and assesses the risk of them becoming established in the UK.
