Abstract Viruses affecting human and animal populations have been hitting the headlines in recent years and it has to be said that it has been mostly bad press. These minute particles have a fundamentally simple structure consisting of a protein coat enclosing a nucleic acid core, yet this apparently uncomplicated organization conceals a great diversity of highly successful strategies for survival and spread.
