Beekeeping around the world: Sculptured beehives: a revival of an old tradition in Germany

Abstract
In wooded areas of Europe people went into the forest to collect honey from wild honey bees living in hollow tree trunks. Later this developed into a tradition of special forest beekeeping (called Zeidlerei in Germany). It is thought that the forest beekeeping later turned into garden beekeeping when beekeepers took pieces of tree trunk with the bees inside home to their private gardens.
