Abstract
On the 7 January 2004, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) announced that the first draft version of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) genome sequence had been deposited into free public databases. The honey bee genome is about one-tenth the size of the human genome, containing about 300 million DNA base pairs. The Honey Bee Genome Project will provide important tools and unique models to improve human health and provide an important economic resource.
